4 cities - views from a Scanian landscape

The picture series 4 cities was created by Robert Weisz, based on his great love for Scania, and especially the west coast. Robert had lived and worked in Malmö for some of his life and later moved to Borstahusen, a fishing village just outside Landskrona.

The four images we have for sale are originally from a work of over 800 views of cities - Thesaurus philopoliticus. A rather strange work in itself, published by Daniel Meisner 1623-1631. The work has been produced with views of cities and then added a foreground image, often copied from more famous works by Braun and Hogenberg. These pictures have then been written with thoughtful lines of a moral type.

There has been a lot of speculation about why the images and the language of thought were chosen for each image. But there is no evidence that they actually have any direct connection to the city itself and it is quite possible that it all depends on chance and taste.

The work was published several times during the 17th century, including in 1642, 162 and 1700.

The engravings are made by Eberhard Kieser with assistance from Matthäus Merian and Sebastian Furck. Sebastian's initials can be found on the Helsingborg print.

If you want to browse the work in its entirety, it is in several musee collections. But perhaps the easiest is to browse the digitized version of Google Books .
