Hand colored prints
We produce hand-colored prints, to order. The vast majority of our prints can be ordered colored. What determines is the type of paper it has been printed on, but in principle all prints on handmade paper from Lessebo or Ingrespapper work well.
The process
If you are interested in a colored print from us, we start by looking at historical editions. There were a few different ways to color the copperplate in the past, for example if the entire ocean would be in color, or only coastlines. The same applies to large cornfields or other surfaces that give the print its character.
When we agree on how the print should be colored, we do a color analysis and try to get as close as possible to the color tones of the original. We color all prints with high-quality watercolor, for best pigmentation and light fastness.
During the entire process, from choosing a template to the finished result, we adjust along the way.
So what does it cost?
The price depends on the size of the print and how much of the map is to be colored. You will always know the price before you place your order and it is only when we have discussed historical editions and scope that we can give you a price. In the example below, the total price, including printing, is approx. € 350-500.
Colors
We mainly use watercolor paint from Winsor & Newton, partly because they have high lightfastness, which means that your colored print will not fade in the first place, but also because after testing several of the brands, we feel that Winsor & Newton's watercolor paint is not so saturated once it dries. It may sound a little contradictory, but the result looks like the color has faded over the years - although we don't want the color to fade when it hangs on your wall.
Other adaptations
It is of course possible to personalize and adapt the prints in other ways. An example is the maps of medieval Visby that a couple of friends got where their escapades during medieval week were marked out.
Other examples have included adding impact metal* to map details, or marking an individual house with color. Another of our customers wanted to add extra content to a map legend. In that case, it was to get out a quill pen and a steel pin to get the right feeling and to let the added text blend in with the existing one.
Your imagination sets the limits, but we reserve the right to refuse a customization if we think it's too complicated or if we don't think the customization is something we want to make/sell.
Important to know
A hand-colored print is not made digitally. This means that there may be variations in how the color looks, especially on large bodies of water such as water. Maybe it's darker on one side than the other. Of course, we try to be as accurate as possible and follow the template we agreed on. But a hand-colored object is a piece of craftsmanship, produced according to your wishes, but where the result may vary.
A specially ordered print from us does not include a right of withdrawal - based on the regulations of the Swedish Consumer Agency.
