Denmark (1544)
Denmark (1544)
Decorative woodcut reproduction of Denmark and southern Sweden from Sebastian Münster's work Cosmographia, first published in 1544.
The work Cosmographia is interesting. Both for its history, but also for the curiosity that the creator added. The work is full of improbable descriptions and pure inaccuracies by today's standards. But it is still a map where you can orient yourself (which has not always been the case with Sebastian Münster's work). The image is carefully reproduced and enlarged, from the relatively small woodcut of the original work. And precisely the woodcuts were the reason why the work was so widely spread and was so popular. The work was one of the most appreciated works of the time. And was published in several languages and received a total of 24 editions over 100 years.
The work retained its popularity and scientific weight until the middle of the 17th century.
This map is also available for purchase in a folder, with associated swedish translations from the work. In the folder is also the map of Scandinavia included.
The picture is sold without a frame.
