Theasaurus philopoliticus - View of Malmö - Daniel Meisner (1623)
Theasaurus philopoliticus - View of Malmö - Daniel Meisner (1623)
Copperplate reproduction.
Beautiful reproduction of a so-called view of Malmö. Or Elbogen, then part of Denmark. The image is a reproduction from the work Theasaurus philopoliticus, which was published in Frankfurt sometime between 1623 and 1631.
The picture shows the city of Malmö, then Elbogen, and in the foreground two men are dueling. The works are a bit of a curiosity, as the image itself is copied from an older work. And Meisner added language of thought around the image afterwards. The languages of thought are divided into two parts. Above and below the image. They are also written in both Latin and German.
A translation of the languages of thought can be as follows:
Even good fighters fall sooner or later.
No one must trust his powers, even if he has the strength of Achilles.
By treacherous cunning of the real Paris he falls.
A peasant often kills a good fencer by insidious means.
Completely unexpectedly, even the best swimmer drowns if he is unlucky.
The picture is sold without a frame.

Very nice print and fun with the background story that can be read about Robert and his collections. Looking forward to seeing what goes on sale in the future.
