Triumph of Emperor Maximilian. No 44 - Hans Burgkmair about 1516-1519
Descriptive text of image 44 from the work Triumph of Maximilian I. Printed by the Holbein Society 1875. "Herr Wolfgang von Polheim, master of jousts and of the course, mounted and clad as a tilter. His head is unarmed, only wearing the crown of honor. He has a golden chain around his neck, and bears no target. He carries his couplet, stating that the games have never been exercised in the world with the same varieties of style as in the court of the Emperor, where they have been instituted with his assistance"
As you can see above, the standard is empty and there is no text to read there. But that's the way it should be. If you look at reproductions and originals from collections in our museums, you will see that these are also shiny. This is because the work was never completed and also other images in the series, for example the first image that would bear the title of the work, are left as such.
