Reproduction of plate 52.

Quote from Triumph of Maximilian 1 - published by The Holbein Society:
"The Shield course,32 a rank of five men with movable vampplates,33 and chapeaux a la mentonniere.34

32 , Named also the course of the ingenious shield (Geschaftet-ScheibenRennen). It was on this shield that the assault was delivered. (See Note 29.)
33 See Note 20.
34 They called the mentonniere the lower part of the casque, which covers the chin, the neck, and half of the chest. The chapeau de mentonniere, also called the great mentonniere, was a kind of shield which the champion attached above the mentonniere, or, if he had it not, simply on the chin. To have the chapeau a la mentonniere was as much as to say, to be armed with this targe. These chapeaux differed from the mentonniere in that they were larger. Usually they were ornamented with the same material as the caparison of the horse.”
